Hello
Scouters,
As I mentioned in my first post, I wanted to discuss a little of the
history of commissioner service. The position of commissioner is one of the
oldest in scouting and is the origin of the professional scouting positions,
which is why professional scouters wear the wreath of service today. During
BSA’s earliest days (around 1916), the original, resourceful individuals who
got the scouting movement going in America were called commissioners. Some of
these commissioners became scout executives (at that time called field
executives). The creation of these new executive positions led to the
separation of roles as well as the partnership of the executive and the volunteer
commissioner which is still in place today. As the organization and workload
grew, the need for district commissioners and eventually unit commissioners
became necessary.
If you know of someone in the Daniel Boone council who
would make a good commissioner please email me at my address below. Each of our
districts is in need of scouters who would like to stay connected with scouting
and would like to work with units to help them succeed.
For current Commissioners: Please don’t forget about
Commissioner’s college on June 4th at Ridge Crest in Black Mountain.
Please be sure to register and attend, it’s very worthwhile training. I can
send you the registration information or you can register at pacommissionercollege.com.
Yours
in Scouting,
Thomas Kuster
